Volunteers release 3,000 juvenile fish as part of company’s initiative
MORE than 3,000 juvenile fish were released into Sungai Mandalipau in Papar, Sabah, some 40km from here as part of a conservation effort.
The fish were released by volunteers from Petronas, Department of Fisheries, SK Mandalipau, Sabah Parks and the local communities during the launch of Petronas’ Sayang Sungai 2018 programme.
Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office general manager Rokiah Sulaiman said the activity was among others, aimed at conserving river sources through the Tagal System.
“Sayang Sungai 2018 is part of Petronas’ initiatives to support local conservation programmes in line with our corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. Environment is one of the three pillars of Petronas’ CSR programmes,” she said.
Rokiah said under the Sayang Sungai 2018 programme, Petronas provided the funds for the purchase of juvenile fish, construction of a 300m walkway and repair of amenities at the Tagal site.
The Mandalipau Tagal site will be maintained and cared for by the Parent-Teacher Association of SK Mandalipau, a school located in the vicinity.
Under the Tagal System, fishing activities in certain stretches of a river are controlled through zoning – red (no fishing), yellow (controlled fishing for once or twice a year) and green (fishing allowed all-year round).
Rokiah said apart from this, one of the key environmental conservation projects undertaken by Petronas in Sabah was the conservation of Imbak Canyon – 27,599ha of pristine rainforest in the heart of Sabah – in partnership with Yayasan Sabah Group.
“Petronas is also collaborating with the Sabah Forestry Department to conduct a mangrove rehabilitation programme in Tuaran, in a programme called Sayang Bakau,” she added.
